BEYOND THE BEACH

From the old town
to Sabang.

A short introduction to places that carry Baler’s history. Start with the sources, then see the town for yourself.

THREE PLACES TO BEGIN

No single landmark tells the whole story. These are starting points for a visit, with sources if you want to read further.

PLACE & PEOPLE

A longer story
than the beach.

Baler’s history reaches well beyond its best known landmarks. The municipality describes early settlement and migration in the area. The National Museum in Baler adds a wider view of Aurora’s environment, Indigenous knowledge, art and everyday life through its galleries.

It is a good first stop if you want context before walking around town.

TOWN CENTER

The church
and the siege.

The church in Baler’s town center was the site of a siege during the Philippine Revolution. The National Historical Commission’s marker records Filipino forces surrounding a Spanish garrison from June 27, 1898 to June 2, 1899.

Visit the marker and consider the story from the perspective of the Filipinos as well as the Spanish soldiers inside.

SABANG & BEYOND

The waves
and the people.

Baler is officially recognized as the birthplace of Philippine surfing under Republic Act No. 11957. That title is part of the story. So are the people who surf here, teach new riders and keep the beach community going today.

Head to Sabang to see that living culture. Give surfers space, listen to local advice and remember that the beach is part of a town, not just a backdrop for a trip.
